Eleocharis sp. 'Japan'
Origin: Japan
Eleocharis sp. 'Japan' is a refined miniature variant of the dwarf hairgrass group, producing extraordinarily fine, hair-like blades that grow only 5 to 8 cm tall — making it one of the smallest and most delicate foreground carpeting plants available. Its diminutive scale is particularly well suited to nano aquariums and Iwagumi-style layouts where a perfectly manicured, ultra-fine lawn effect is desired. Like other Eleocharis species, it spreads via runners across the substrate over time, forming a dense and natural-looking green meadow. Moderate lighting and CO2 injection deliver the best carpet density and coloration.
Plant in fine, nutrient-rich substrate under moderate to high lighting for optimal carpeting. CO2 injection strongly recommended for dense, low growth — without CO2 the plant grows taller and less densely. Use aquascaping tweezers to plant individual portions 1–2 cm apart. Trim regularly with curved scissors to maintain the desired height. Supplement with liquid micronutrients for sustained healthy growth.
