Elodea canadensis
Origin: North America
Elodea canadensis is one of the most affordable and widely available bunch plants sold in European aquarium shops. Its stems bear attractive dense whorls of small dark green leaves that grow rapidly, competing with algae for nutrients and providing natural water purification. The dense, branching growth makes it an excellent refuge for fish fry and small invertebrates seeking shelter. Unlike many aquarium plants, it adapts well to cooler, unheated aquariums, making it suitable for goldfish, temperate species, and outdoor tubs. A beginner-friendly, low-maintenance background plant that helps establish biological stability in new aquariums.
Simply bunch the stems together and anchor them lightly in substrate, or float freely in the tank. No CO2 or specialized fertilization required — grows under low to medium light using ambient dissolved nutrients. Trim regularly to prevent overgrowing the tank. Not recommended for high-temperature tropical setups above 28°C as growth becomes sluggish. A handful of bunches added to a new tank rapidly absorbs ammonia-derived nutrients while the cycle establishes.
