Elodea canadensis
Origin: North America (naturalised throughout Europe)
Elodea canadensis, known as Canadian Pondweed or Waterpest (Brede Waterpest in Dutch), is one of the most widely used and effective submerged oxygenating pond plants in European water gardening. Its trailing stems bear dense whorls of small, dark green oval leaves that photosynthesize prolifically, releasing oxygen into the water column throughout the day. This oxygen production, combined with vigorous uptake of dissolved nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus, makes it a highly effective natural water purifier that helps control algae and maintain water clarity. It tolerates a wide range of temperatures including cool water, making it suitable for unheated ponds year-round in Belgian and Dutch climates. Provides excellent spawning habitat and shelter for fish fry, tadpoles, newts, and invertebrates. Sold in bunches for easy planting or free-floating use.
Can be planted in substrate or left free-floating. Grows in sun or partial shade. Tolerates cool water temperatures and survives mild winters at the pond bottom. Trim regularly to prevent overgrowth — it spreads vigorously in nutrient-rich water. Do not discard cuttings in natural waterways as it can be invasive outside its range.
