Equisetum fluviatile
Origin: Europe, including native to Netherlands and Belgium
Equisetum fluviatile, the Water Horsetail, is one of the few truly ancient vascular plant lineages still alive today — a living relic of the Carboniferous era. Its elegant, segmented hollow stems bear delicate whorls of fine green branchlets at each node, creating a striking, distinctly architectural form unlike any flowering plant. It thrives in pond margins and shallow water up to 30 cm deep, where its strong vertical geometry adds a zen-like, minimalist quality highly valued in contemporary Dutch and Belgian water garden design. The silica in its stems gives the plant a subtly rough, tactile quality and natural durability. Fully cold-hardy in Belgian and Dutch climates, it is a year-round structural feature in pond margins.
Plant in shallow water (0–30 cm depth) at the pond margin, or in containers submerged at the pond edge. Thrives in full sun but tolerates partial shade. Very cold-hardy — dies back to ground level in winter but re-emerges reliably in spring. Can spread via underground rhizomes in soft pond substrate — contain with a basket or pot to prevent spreading. Does not require feeding or special substrate.
