Eriocaulon sp.
Also known as: Goias Eriocaulon, Brazil Pipewort Goias
Origin: Brazil (Goias state)
Eriocaulon sp. 'Goias' (sometimes spelled 'Goiás') is a Brazilian pipewort from the Goias state, collected and introduced to the aquarium hobby by specialist plant explorers. It is universally regarded as one of the rarest and most desirable aquarium plants in existence, producing a rosette of almost impossibly dense, fine, dark-green leaves that form a tight, ball-like cushion of extraordinary precision.
Its cultivation requirements are at the absolute extreme of planted tank husbandry. pH must be maintained between 4.5 and 6.0, water must be very soft (GH below 4), very high light must reach the substrate unimpeded, CO2 must be maintained at 30–40 mg/L without interruption, and water changes must be conducted regularly with RO or equivalent soft water to prevent hardness accumulation. Even in expert hands growth is extremely slow.
Possessing healthy, growing specimens of Eriocaulon sp. 'Goias' is considered a mark of the highest aquascaping expertise. It is rarely available outside specialist collector circles and premium rare-plant events.
Light: Extreme (100–150+ PAR); uncompromising — below this threshold the plant will not grow. CO2: Required at 30–40 mg/L; any interruption risks irreversible decline; automated systems mandatory. Fertilisation: RO-based soft water only; micro trace elements at minimal dose; zero standard fertiliser. Placement: Foreground focal specimen; single rosettes given ample space (5 cm radius minimum). Propagation: Extremely slow; daughter rosettes form after 6–12 months; separate only when 2+ cm across.
