About

Hydrocharis morsus-ranae, the European Frogbit, is a charming native floating plant found across Europe and temperate Asia, bearing small, glossy, kidney-shaped leaves with a waxy upper surface that closely resembles a miniature water lily pad. In summer it produces delicate white three-petaled flowers with a yellow center, adding a subtle floral accent to the surface. Below the waterline, its trailing, feathery roots provide excellent refuge for fish fry, eggs, and small invertebrates seeking shelter. It reproduces readily by producing small daughter plants on side runners, quickly creating a natural floating garden. A beautiful, gentle addition to planted aquariums, ponds, and outdoor water features in temperate climates.

Care Guide

Float freely on the water surface under medium to bright light. Tolerates a wide range of temperatures including cooler conditions, making it suitable for unheated tanks and outdoor ponds in Belgium and the Netherlands. Remove excess daughter plants regularly to prevent overcrowding and to maintain open swimming space. In outdoor ponds it may die back in winter but returns from turions (overwintering buds) in spring. No substrate required.
