Fissidens fontanus
Origin: North America
Fissidens fontanus, commonly called Phoenix Moss, is widely regarded as one of the finest quality mosses available for planted aquariums. Its distinctive feather-like fronds — each leaf arranged alternately along branching stems in a precise, structured pattern — create an extraordinary sense of depth, texture, and natural complexity that few other mosses can match. The deep, rich green coloration under good lighting, combined with the jewel-like density of healthy growth, makes it a fixture in competition-level aquascapes and high-end planted displays. It grows slowly compared to Java Moss or Flame Moss, but the resulting structure is far more refined and photogenic. Attaches well to stones, wood, and mesh with fine cotton or fishing line.
Attach to hardscape with fine thread, rubber bands, or mesh backing. Grows in low to medium light without CO2, though CO2 and moderate light improve density and coloration. Trim with sharp scissors to maintain shape and prevent lower portions from dying off due to shading. Keep water temperatures below 25°C — this moss is less tolerant of high heat than some tropical mosses. Excellent for walls, carpets, and intricate aquascape structures.
