About

Flame Moss (Taxiphyllum sp. 'Flame') is one of the most visually dramatic mosses available in the aquarium hobby. Unlike most mosses that spread horizontally, Flame Moss exhibits a characteristic upward growth habit, with stems spiraling and twisting skyward to produce a shape reminiscent of a dancing flame. This unique vertical orientation makes it an exceptional choice for midground and accent planting, where it creates a striking focal point against flat or horizontal elements. Originating from tropical Asia, it performs best under moderate lighting and benefits from CO2 supplementation, which intensifies its growth rate and deepens its rich green coloring. Without CO2 it grows more slowly but retains its signature upright habit. Like other Taxiphyllum mosses, Flame Moss attaches readily to hardscape via rhizoids and needs no substrate. It is commonly tied to small pieces of driftwood or mounted on rock clusters positioned mid-tank. The dense, upright clumps provide excellent refuge for shrimp and small fish fry. It is also notable for being relatively resistant to algae compared to some other mosses, especially with good water flow. Routine trimming of outer fronds keeps the flame silhouette well-defined and prevents the inner base from dying. It propagates easily from any fragment, making it straightforward to spread through a tank or share with other hobbyists.

Care Guide

Placement and Attachment Secure Flame Moss to driftwood, stones, or mesh frames using cotton thread or cyanoacrylate gel. Position where water flow passes gently over it to keep stems clean and oxygenated. Ideal as a midground accent or stone cluster feature.

Lighting Moderate light (20–35 µmol/m²/s PAR) supports the best upward growth habit. Very low light causes horizontal creeping; stronger light combined with nutrients speeds flame-shaped development.

CO2 and Fertilization CO2 injection at 20–30 ppm is recommended to achieve thick, well-defined upright clumps. Apply weekly liquid fertilizer rich in trace elements. Avoid phosphate overload to deter algae.

Water Conditions Target pH 5.5–7.5, temperature 15–26°C. Soft to moderately hard water is acceptable. Stable parameters produce the most consistent vertical growth.

Pruning and Maintenance Trim the outer edges every 3–4 weeks with scissors to maintain the flame silhouette and promote new growth from the base. Remove any brown or decaying material promptly.

Propagation Divide clumps and tie new portions wherever the flame shape is desired. Growth under CO2 and moderate light is moderately fast.

Common Issues Inner die-back occurs if the clump becomes too dense and light cannot penetrate. Regular trimming prevents this. Staghorn algae may appear under fluctuating CO2 — maintain stable injection levels.
