Taxiphyllum sp. 'Flame'
Origin: Southeast Asia (cultivated)
Flame Moss (Taxiphyllum sp. 'Flame') is instantly recognizable by its extraordinary growth form — individual fronds grow upright and twist slightly as they elongate, creating a distinctive flame-like or smoke-like appearance that earned it its vivid common name. Unlike most mosses that spread laterally, Flame Moss grows vertically, which makes it uniquely suited for creating textural height variations in the foreground and midground of planted aquariums. It attaches naturally to rocks, driftwood, and other rough surfaces with time, and can also be tied or glued in place. A relatively undemanding moss that grows without CO2 under low to medium light, making it accessible to beginners while delivering a striking visual effect.
Attach to hardscape with fine thread, aquarium-safe gel, or moss pins. Grows under low light without CO2 supplementation — CO2 and moderate light improve density and deeper green coloration. Trim growing tips to maintain the desired height and shape. Tolerant of a wide range of water parameters. Excellent as a mid-layer between carpeting plants and taller background plants.
