Hydrocharis morsus-ranae
Origin: Europe, temperate Asia
Hydrocharis morsus-ranae, the European Frogbit, is a charming native floating plant widely sold in Belgian and Dutch aquarium and pond shops for its delicate beauty and practical benefits. Its small, glossy rounded leaves resemble miniature lily pads and float gracefully on the water surface, providing natural shade that reduces the light available for algae growth. The trailing white feathery roots below the waterline create an instantly welcoming refuge for fish fry and small invertebrates. It reproduces readily by sending out short stolons that produce new daughter plants, quickly establishing natural surface coverage. An affordable, zero-maintenance floating plant that suits aquariums, outdoor pond tubs, and water features.
Float freely on the water surface under medium light. Reproduces rapidly in good conditions — thin regularly to prevent complete surface coverage and maintain adequate light for submerged plants. Avoid strong surface agitation which can damage the leaves. Suitable for unheated and heated aquariums within temperature tolerance. In outdoor settings, may die back in winter but produces overwintering turions that regenerate in spring.
