Glossostigma cleistanthum
Also known as: Closed-Flower Glosso, Australian Glosso
Origin: Australia
Glossostigma cleistanthum is an Australian Glossostigma species whose cleistogamous (self-fertilising closed) flowers and slightly oval, somewhat larger leaves distinguish it from the more common G. elatinoides. The tissue culture form ensures a pest-free introduction, which is valuable since Glosso species are sensitive to algae competition during establishment. It forms a similarly dense, flat carpet but spreads at a somewhat slower pace, which can actually be advantageous in smaller tanks where rapid overgrowth would be a problem. Like all Glossostigma, it requires high light to creep rather than grow upright. CO2 injection is strongly recommended. Best results in fine, nutrient-rich substrate such as aquasoil in soft, acidic water.
Light: Very high CO2: Required Fertilisation: Nutrient-rich substrate; regular macro and micro liquid dosing Placement: Foreground carpet Propagation: Stolons spread naturally; divide mat sections
