Glossostigma elatinoides
Also known as: Glossostigma, Glosso
Origin: New Zealand, Australia (TC cultivar)
Glossostigma elatinoides is native to New Zealand and southeastern Australia and was one of the first carpet plants to gain widespread popularity in the Nature Aquarium hobby, thanks to Takashi Amano's use of it in iconic aquascapes. It forms a tight, prostrate mat of tiny, spoon-shaped bright green leaves that stays very low when given strong light. The tissue culture format ensures completely algae and pest-free plantlets, eliminating the main risk historically associated with using this plant — algae contamination from supplier stocks.
Light: Medium to high; strong light keeps the carpet tight and low — insufficient light causes vertical, leggy growth. CO2: Beneficial to required; best results achieved with CO2 injection. Substrate: Fine, nutrient-rich substrate; plant into a nutritious base layer for fastest spread. Planting: Rinse TC gel; separate into tiny plugs; plant 2 cm apart across the foreground. Growth: Moderate; once established spreads rapidly under good conditions — prune monthly.
