Glossostigma elatinoides
Origin: Australia, New Zealand
Glossostigma elatinoides is one of the most iconic foreground carpeting plants in the planted aquarium hobby, famously popularized by Takashi Amano in the early days of the Nature Aquarium movement and still considered one of the benchmark plants for high-quality aquascaping compositions. It forms an extremely dense, fine-textured carpet of tiny spoon-shaped leaves that hug the substrate, creating the impression of a perfectly manicured lawn when grown under high lighting with CO2 injection. Originally from Australia and New Zealand, it is found at the edges of shallow streams and marshes. In the aquarium it responds dramatically to light levels — under high light it grows low and dense (1–2 cm), while in lower light it reaches upward toward the light source and becomes taller and less carpet-like.
Plant individual pinches 1–2 cm apart in fine, nutrient-rich substrate (aquasoil recommended). High-intensity lighting is essential for true carpeting growth — with insufficient light the plant grows upward and loses its carpet form. CO2 injection at 15–30 ppm strongly improves growth rate and density. Regular trimming with aquascape scissors maintains a neat carpet and stimulates lateral spreading. Liquid fertilization including iron and micronutrients supports vibrant green coloration.
