Glossostigma sp. 'Giant'
Origin: Australia / New Zealand
Glossostigma sp. 'Giant' is a larger-leaved variant of the classic Glossostigma carpet plant group, producing noticeably broader, oval leaves compared to the tiny spoon-shaped leaves of standard G. elatinoides. It maintains the same creeping, mat-forming growth habit while providing a coarser, more naturalistic foreground texture that works particularly well for creating visually varied foregrounds or for aquascapes where a somewhat rougher, more organic ground cover is desired rather than a perfectly uniform fine-textured lawn. Like all Glossostigma, it demands high light intensity and CO2 injection to maintain its low, carpeting growth form — without these conditions it will grow upward rather than spreading laterally along the substrate.
Plant in fine, nutrient-rich substrate (aquasoil preferred) under high-intensity lighting with CO2 injection. Without both high light and CO2, the plant grows upright and loses its carpet character. Trim regularly with aquascape scissors to maintain density and compact form. Supplement with liquid micronutrients including iron. Best suited to softwater conditions (low GH/KH) reflecting its Australasian origin.
