Helanthium bolivianum 'Vesuvius'
Also known as: Vesuvius Sword, Spiral Chain Sword, Corkscrew Sword
Origin: South America
Helanthium bolivianum 'Vesuvius' is a cultivar selected for its dramatic spiralling leaf form, in which each blade twists repeatedly along its length like a corkscrew. It spreads via stolons like other chain sword relatives, gradually forming a colony of swirling rosettes that undulate mesmerisingly in flow. Despite its exotic appearance it is surprisingly easy to grow, tolerating a broad range of conditions and performing adequately even in low-tech setups with basic fertilisation.
Light: Medium (30–55 PAR); high light promotes more compact spirals and faster runner production. CO2: Not required; liquid fertiliser and root tabs support healthy growth without injection. Planting: Plant individual rosettes 5–6 cm apart; the spiralling leaves need space to display fully. Maintenance: Remove older leaves as they age; allow runners to spread naturally or redirect to fill desired areas. Note: The spiral leaf form is a genetic trait that becomes more pronounced as the plant matures in stable conditions.
