Helanthium tenellum
Also known as: Dwarf Chain Sword, Chain Sword
Origin: Americas
Helanthium tenellum (formerly Echinodorus tenellus sensu lato) is widespread across the Americas and has been a staple of the planted tank hobby for decades. It produces narrow, linear leaves from a compact rosette and spreads aggressively via stolons, making it one of the fastest-carpeting plants available. Its exceptional adaptability to water chemistry, temperature, and light conditions ensures success even in basic setups, and it is one of the few carpet plants that performs consistently without CO2 injection.
Light: Low to high (15–80+ PAR); one of the most adaptable carpet plants in terms of light requirements. CO2: Not required; grows and spreads effectively in low-tech tanks with root tab fertilisation. Planting: Plant rosettes 4–5 cm apart; runners will fill gaps within 4–6 weeks under good conditions. Maintenance: Remove runners that stray beyond the desired area; trim blades if they grow taller than desired. Note: Runner production is prolific — this plant will spread into the midground if not managed.
