Helanthium tenellum
Also known as: Pygmy Chain Sword, Narrow Leaf Chain Sword, Dwarf Amazon Sword
Origin: North America (TC cultivar)
Helanthium tenellum (formerly Echinodorus tenellus) is native to North and Central America and is one of the smallest members of the sword plant family, growing as a compact grass-like rosette that sends out runners in all directions to fill the foreground. The tissue culture format provides algae-free, pest-free plantlets that establish quickly and begin runner production within a few weeks. It is highly adaptable and one of the easier foreground carpeting plants available, performing well even in low-tech setups.
Light: Medium; develops a fuller carpet under moderate to good lighting. CO2: Not required; makes reasonable progress in low-tech tanks without injection. Substrate: Nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs essential for vigorous runner production. Planting: Rinse TC gel; plant individual rosettes 3–5 cm apart; runners fill gaps naturally. Growth: Moderate; runner propagation fills foreground naturally — trim outer runners to maintain edges.
