Hemianthus callitrichoides
Also known as: HC Cuba, Dwarf Baby Tears, Cuba, Tiny Tears
Origin: Cuba (TC cultivar)
Hemianthus callitrichoides 'Cuba' (HC Cuba) holds the title of the world's smallest aquarium plant, with tiny, round leaves barely 1 mm across on delicate creeping stems. Originating from Cuba, it forms the quintessential Nature Aquarium foreground carpet and is the signature plant of countless competition aquascapes. The tissue culture format ensures completely sterile, algae-free plantlets that establish quickly without the introduction of pests — the ideal starting point for an immaculate carpet aquascape.
Light: Medium to high; requires good light to creep across the substrate. CO2: Beneficial to required; grows poorly and becomes stringy without CO2. Substrate: Fine, nutrient-rich substrate; a nutritious base layer is essential for carpeting. Planting: Separate into small plugs (1 cm²) and plant 2–3 cm apart across the foreground. Growth: Slow; patience required — a full carpet takes 6–10 weeks under good conditions.
