Heteranthera zosterifolia
Also known as: Stargrass, Mud Plantain
Origin: South America
Heteranthera zosterifolia is native to the rivers, streams, and floodplains of South America, particularly the Pantanal and Amazonian basin regions where it grows in clear, soft, warm waters. In the wild it forms extensive underwater beds, with stems branching profusely to create dense colonies that shelter small fish and aquatic insects. The leaves are narrow and linear, arranged in a star-like pattern around each node, which gives the plant its common name. The lime-green to yellow-green colouration is distinctive and luminous, making it an eye-catching contrast plant in Dutch or nature aquariums. In the aquarium hobby it is celebrated for its vigorous, branching growth that fills the background or midground rapidly without heavy CO2 supplementation, though it benefits from it. When trimmed, each stem readily produces multiple side shoots, amplifying the bush effect over time. Small, pale-blue flowers may appear at the water surface, adding charm to the display. Heteranthera zosterifolia is beginner-friendly as long as lighting and basic nutrient levels are provided.
Placement Excellent for mid-to-background positions. Plant bunches of 6–10 stems spaced 2–3 cm apart. As the plant branches naturally, a single group will quickly expand into a lush thicket.
Lighting Moderate-to-high lighting (40–80 PAR) produces the best growth and brightest coloration. Under low light the plant etiolates and sheds lower leaves. LED fixtures with a full spectrum are recommended.
CO2 & Fertilisation CO2 injection accelerates growth and improves colour vibrancy, though it is not strictly required. Regular liquid fertiliser with complete macro and micronutrients, especially potassium and iron, keeps foliage lush.
Propagation Top cuttings at 6–10 cm can be immediately replanted. Side shoots that develop after trimming can also be removed and planted separately. The plant propagates quickly and easily.
Trimming Trim tops every 1–2 weeks during active growth to prevent the plant from reaching the surface and becoming leggy. Each trimming stimulates side-shoot production, steadily increasing density. Remove bare lower sections as needed.
