Heteranthera zosterifolia
Also known as: Stargrass, Star Grass, Brazilian Stargrass
Origin: South America
Heteranthera zosterifolia originates from Brazil and is one of the classic Dutch aquascape plants, valued for its distinctive habit of forming star-shaped whorls of narrow, strap-like leaves at each stem node. It grows relatively quickly and branches prolifically when trimmed, forming dense, globe-shaped masses of bright green that contrast beautifully with red and broad-leaved plants. It appreciates medium light and benefits from CO2 injection but can persist without it in nutrient-rich water.
Light: Medium (30–60 PAR); grows well in medium light; higher light increases branching. CO2: Beneficial at 15–25 mg/L; noticeably improves density and growth rate. Fertiliser: Weekly balanced NPK plus micronutrients; potassium particularly important. Planting: Midground or background groups of 5–7 stems; trim every 2 weeks for bushy habit. Growth: Fast; 15–40 cm; prolific branching after trimming creates dense masses.
