Hydrocotyle leucocephala
Origin: Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina
Hydrocotyle leucocephala, the Brazilian Pennywort, is one of the easiest and most forgiving aquarium stem plants available. It grows vigorously in a wide range of conditions and can be used as a planted background species, a trailing midground accent, or a floating plant. Its round, bright green leaves produce small white flowers when grown at the surface. Tolerant of low light and no CO2. A classic 'beginner's plant' and excellent natural nutrient absorber for heavily stocked tanks.
Plant in substrate or allow to float. No special fertiliser requirements; benefits from root tabs if planted. Temperature 18–28 °C, wide pH range. Trim regularly to prevent blocking light for lower plants. Very hard to kill.
