Hygrophila costata
Also known as: Ribbed Hygrophila, Costate Hygrophila
Origin: Pantropical
Hygrophila costata is a large, robust stem plant found across tropical Asia and parts of Africa and the Americas, bearing prominently ribbed, ovate leaves on thick, upright stems. The ribbed leaf texture gives it a distinctive, bold quality that stands out from the smooth-leaved Hygrophila species commonly found in the hobby. It is an extremely adaptable and hardy plant, tolerating a wide range of water conditions and lighting levels, making it excellent for beginner aquarists and community tanks where demanding plants are impractical. In the aquascape its bold, textured leaves provide a striking contrast against fine-leaved background plants, creating visual variety and depth.
Light: Low to medium (20–40 PAR); adapts readily to most aquarium lighting. CO2: Not required; very tolerant of low-tech conditions. Fertilisation: Minimal fertilisation sufficient; tolerates nutrient-poor water. Placement: Background in medium to large aquariums; unsuitable for nano tanks. Propagation: Cut side shoots 10–15 cm; roots quickly without special treatment.
