Hygrophila difformis
Origin: South Asia, Southeast Asia
Hygrophila difformis, the Water Wisteria, is one of the most popular and reliable aquarium plants in the world, combining extraordinary hardiness with attractive, variable leaf morphology. In low light the leaves are broader and less divided; in stronger light they develop the deeply lobed, feather-like, pinnate form that makes the plant most visually distinctive. This heterophylly (variable leaf shape) is a fascinating characteristic unique to this species. It is an excellent nutrient absorber that competes strongly with algae, and its dense growth provides refuge for fish fry and small invertebrates. One of the most forgiving plants available — capable of growing in almost any conditions — yet capable of impressive beauty under good lighting.
Plant in the background or midground in any substrate. Grows under low light without CO2 — simply add it and watch it grow. In medium to high light with fertilization, leaves become more deeply lobed and the plant grows dramatically faster. Trim top portions regularly and replant cuttings for bushy growth. Highly adaptable to a wide range of temperatures, pH, and hardness. An ideal first aquarium plant for beginners.
