Hygrophila lacustris
Origin: North America, Central America
Hygrophila lacustris is one of the few Hygrophila species native to the Americas rather than Asia, found naturally in streams, ponds, and wetland habitats across North and Central America. Its long, narrow, willow-like leaves on upright stems create an elegant, swaying background presence quite different from the typical broad-leaved Asian Hygrophila species. It is highly adaptable and grows readily under moderate lighting without CO2, making it as easy to care for as its Asian relatives. Its American origin makes it a natural and authentic choice for native North or Central American freshwater biotope setups, where it complements species such as sunfish, killifish, North American cichlids, and native livebearers.
Plant in loose clusters in the background. Grows well under medium light without CO2 supplementation. Trim regularly and replant cuttings to maintain density. Supplement with liquid fertilizer or root tabs for optimal growth. Highly adaptable to both soft and moderately hard water across a broad temperature range. Excellent for biotope-themed aquariums celebrating North and Central American aquatic flora.
