Hygrophila lancea
Also known as: Araguaia Hygrophila, Brazil Hygrophila
Origin: Araguaia River, Brazil
Hygrophila lancea 'Araguaia' originates from the Araguaia river system in Brazil and is an aquarium-adapted form selected for its striking purple-red pigmentation on the undersides of its narrow lanceolate leaves. Above water, the emergent form is highly decorative with lush growth and easy flowering. Submerged, the purple colouration is most intense under high light and with adequate iron. It is a fast grower that requires regular trimming to stay in shape and prevent lower leaf loss.
Light: High; 60–90 PAR for maximum red-purple pigmentation. CO2: Beneficial; 20–30 ppm for compact internodes and vivid colouration. Water: pH 6.0–7.5, soft to moderately hard. Planting: Plant groups of 5–7 stems in the background; trim and replant tops every 3–4 weeks. Growth: Fast; requires consistent trimming; ensure adequate iron in fertiliser regime.
