Hygrophila pinnatifida
Also known as: Pinnatifida, Pinnate Hygrophila, Oak Leaf Hygrophila
Origin: India
Hygrophila pinnatifida is one of the most visually distinctive Hygrophila species available, sourced from rivers in western India. Its deeply pinnate, lobed leaves bear a strong resemblance to oak leaves and display a fascinating two-tone colouration: the upper surface is mottled brown, green and purple while the underside is a vivid magenta-purple that is visible as new leaves unfurl. It grows as both a stem plant and, when stems break off, individual leaves can attach to hardscape and grow in a manner reminiscent of Bucephalandra. This dual growth habit and unique appearance make it a favourite for nature and biotope aquascapes.
Light: Medium to high (35–55 PAR); mottled colouration develops best under good light. CO2: Beneficial at 15–25 mg/L; improves growth rate and leaf expression significantly. Fertilisation: Comprehensive regular dosing; responds well to iron and micronutrients. Placement: Midground to background; individual leaves can be attached to rocks and wood. Propagation: Stem cuttings 8–12 cm; detached leaves with petioles will root on hardscape.
