Hygrophila polysperma
Origin: Southeast Asia
Hygrophila polysperma is one of the hardiest, most forgiving, and most widely sold aquarium plants in the European hobby, tolerating an extraordinary range of lighting, temperature, pH, and water hardness conditions that would stress most other plants. Its light green, oval leaves grow vigorously and rapidly under almost any conditions, making it the ideal first aquarium plant for beginners who want to establish a planted aquarium without technical knowledge or specialized equipment. It has been a staple of the European aquarium trade for decades precisely because of its near-indestructible reliability. Under bright lighting some varieties develop attractive pink or reddish hints on the upper leaf surface.
Plant loosely in the background in any substrate. No CO2, special lighting, or fertilization required for basic healthy growth. Trim regularly as it grows rapidly and can shade lower plants. Replant cuttings to propagate. Can be kept at temperatures from 15°C to 30°C — one of the broadest temperature ranges of any aquarium plant. Suitable for beginners, goldfish tanks, community aquariums, and any freshwater setup.
