Isoetes lacustris
Also known as: Quillwort, Lake Quillwort
Origin: Europe / North America
Isoetes lacustris belongs to a lineage of vascular plants that has existed largely unchanged since the Carboniferous period. It grows naturally in cold, oligotrophic mountain lakes in Europe and North America, which informs its demanding requirements: very clear, soft, cool water with high light and CO2. In the aquarium it forms a slow-growing rosette of rigid, quill-shaped leaves that emerge from a lobed corm, creating a completely unique sculptural foreground accent with no close visual rival in the hobby.
Light: High (>60 PAR); essential for corm and leaf health in clear, shallow water. CO2: Required; 20–30 mg/l supports growth of the CAM-type photosynthetic mechanism. Planting: Plant the corm just at the substrate surface in fine, low-nutrient gravel or sand; do not bury deeply. Maintenance: Remove old, decaying leaves; growth is very slow — patience is essential. Note: Requires cool, soft, very clear water; does not tolerate warm temperatures (>22°C) or organic-rich substrates.
