Isoetes velata
Also known as: Mediterranean Quillwort, Quillwort
Origin: Mediterranean Europe
Isoetes velata is a quillwort native to the Mediterranean basin, belonging to the lycophyte lineage — among the oldest vascular plant groups on Earth. Its firm, hollow, quill-shaped leaves radiate from a compact corm, creating a structured rosette with a distinctly architectural quality unlike typical aquarium plants. It adapts to full submersion and is cultivated in clear, moderately cool water. Though undemanding compared to Tonina or Eriocaulon, it remains rare in the trade and is chiefly sought by specialty collectors.
Light: Medium; 35–60 PAR; tolerates a range but grows best in moderate light. CO2: Beneficial; 15–25 ppm; not strictly required. Water: pH 6.5–7.8, moderately soft to hard, cool water (15–22°C) preferred. Planting: Plant corm upright in fine to medium substrate; leave crown just exposed. Growth: Slow; very stable; best in cool-water biotope setups.
