Microsorum pteropus 'Aquatica'
Also known as: Aquatica Java Fern
Origin: Cultivar (originally Southeast Asia)
Java Fern 'Aquatica' (Microsorum pteropus 'Aquatica') is distinguished by its slightly lighter, more lime-tinged green coloration compared to the standard dark-green Java Fern. This quality makes it a valuable plant for adding tonal variety to a display that already contains the darker standard form or other deep-green epiphytes.
Care requirements are identical to all Java Fern forms: mount the rhizome on hardscape above the substrate, provide low to moderate light, and supplement with liquid fertilisers. 'Aquatica' is noted for particularly good adaptation to fully submerged life and performs reliably even in tanks with low CO2 and low nutrient levels.
This cultivar is often used in Dutch-style plantings as a lighter-toned epiphytic accent, or in nature aquascapes where its colour provides contrast against darker mosses. It grows slowly but steadily and produces plantlets from leaf margins in the same manner as all Java Fern varieties.
Light: Low to medium; the lighter leaf colour benefits from at least moderate illumination to remain vibrant. CO2: Not required; optional supplementation accelerates growth. Fertilisation: All-in-one liquid fertiliser weekly; good potassium levels support the lighter green leaf tone. Placement: Attach to midground or background hardscape; the lighter colour works well contrasting with darker-green companions. Propagation: Collect leaf-margin plantlets at 3–4 cm and secure to fresh wood or stone.
