Microsorum pteropus
Origin: Southeast Asia
Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus) is one of the most iconic and beloved aquarium plants in the world. Its long, strap-shaped bright-green leaves attach to hardscape such as driftwood and rocks via a rhizome — it must never be planted in substrate. Completely undemanding and requiring no CO2 or specialized fertilizers, it is the quintessential beginner's plant and a staple in virtually every aquarium shop in Belgium and the Netherlands.
Attach the rhizome to driftwood or rock using thread or glue — never bury in substrate. Tolerates low light and a wide range of water parameters. No CO2 required. Remove yellowed or dead leaves. Propagates naturally by producing plantlets on older leaves.
