Microsorum pteropus
Also known as: Java Fern, Common Java Fern
Origin: South-East Asia (Java, Malaysia, Thailand)

Microsorum pteropus, the Java Fern, is arguably the most popular aquarium plant in the world — cultivated in the hobby for decades and available in nearly every aquarium store globally. Native to tropical Asia (Java, Malaysia, Thailand, and surrounding countries), it grows on shaded, wet rocks and submerged wood in forest streams, a habitat that perfectly explains its shade tolerance and rhizome attachment habit.
The standard Java Fern features broad, lance-shaped leaves with distinctive texturing and a dark green coloration. Its thick, horizontal rhizome (stem) anchors it to surfaces and must never be buried — burying the rhizome causes rapid rot. Instead, it is attached to driftwood or rocks using fishing line or aquarium glue, gradually gripping the surface with its root system.
Java Fern is the quintessential low-tech aquarium plant: it requires no CO2, no special substrate, tolerates very low light, and grows in virtually any water chemistry. Its only quirk is sensitivity to strong direct light, which causes black spots on the leaves. Moderate, diffused lighting produces the best results.
Daughter plants develop naturally on the margins of older leaves, providing endless propagation material without any special effort from the aquarist.
Light: Low to medium light (5–25 PAR). Very shade-tolerant — excellent for aquariums with low light or shaded areas under overhanging plants. Strong direct light causes unsightly black spots on leaves.
CO2: Not required. Thrives without CO2 in low-tech setups.
Attachment: Never bury the rhizome. Attach to driftwood or rocks with fishing line, thread, or aquatic glue. The plant will gradually anchor itself with roots.
Propagation: New plantlets develop on the margins and tips of older leaves. Detach when they have 3+ leaves and small root nubs.
Maintenance: Very low. Remove yellowing leaves. Clean algae from leaves with a brush if needed.
Water Parameters: pH 6.0–8.0, temperature 18–30°C. Extremely adaptable.
