Microsorum pteropus 'Philippine'
Also known as: Philippine Java Fern, Broad Leaf Java Fern
Origin: Philippines, Southeast Asia
Java Fern 'Philippine' (Microsorum pteropus 'Philippine') is notable for its substantially wider leaves relative to standard Java Fern, paired with a strongly corrugated, ridged surface texture. This combination gives the plant a bold, architectural presence that reads well in larger tanks and provides excellent contrast alongside fine-textured mosses.
Care requirements mirror those of all Java Fern varieties: mount the rhizome on hardscape without burial, provide low to moderate light, and supplement with liquid fertilisers for best colour. Growth is slow and reliable, and the plant will eventually form impressive multi-rhizome clusters on a single large piece of driftwood.
The Philippine variant is particularly popular in Borneo-themed biotope aquascapes and in tanks where a more substantial, dominant midground plant is needed. Its corrugated surface also makes it very resistant to algae settling permanently, as debris tends to wash off the raised ridges more easily than off flat-surfaced leaves.
Light: Low to medium; 20–50 µmol PAR; tolerates shade but colours best with moderate illumination. CO2: Not required; beneficial if faster growth is desired. Fertilisation: Regular liquid fertilisation with iron ensures the deep green, ridged leaves remain vibrant. Placement: Attach rhizome to midground or background driftwood; allow ample horizontal space for the broad leaves. Propagation: Divide rhizome sections, each with at least two leaves, and reattach to new hardscape.
