About

Microsorum pteropus 'Trident' is a cultivated variety of Java Fern bearing distinctive deeply cut, multi-lobed fronds that typically feature three to five prominent lobes arranged along the length of each frond, creating a trident-like or compound-fern appearance quite unlike any other Java Fern variety. The lobes are separated by deep indentations that extend nearly to the frond midrib, giving the fronds an open, fingered structure reminiscent of the compound leaves of terrestrial Hart's Tongue Fern or the triple prongs of the mythological trident. The overall effect in the aquarium is a plant that appears lighter, more airy, and more complex than either the classic or Windelov forms, as the deeply cut fronds allow light to pass through the gaps between lobes rather than forming a solid green wall. Individual fronds reach 15–25 cm in length. The fronds are dark green, somewhat narrower than classic Java Fern, and equally leathery and durable. As a slow-growing epiphyte, Trident Java Fern is anchored via its rhizome to driftwood or rock in exactly the same manner as all other Java Fern varieties — never planted in substrate. It shares all the classic hardiness: tolerates low light, does not require CO2 supplementation, adapts to a wide range of water conditions, and is resistant to herbivory. The unique frond shape makes Trident Java Fern particularly popular in aquascapes where a fine-textured, naturalistic fern appearance is desired without the high maintenance of more demanding species. It is an exceptional choice for Nature Aquarium and biotope setups seeking visual complexity through plant form rather than color.

Care Guide

Water Parameters Identical to classic Java Fern: pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 20–28 °C, soft to moderately hard water. Extremely adaptable to a wide range of tropical aquarium conditions.

Lighting Low to moderate light (20–70 µmol) suits Trident Java Fern perfectly. The deeply lobed fronds are less prone to algae accumulation than solid broad fronds due to their open structure, allowing slightly higher light tolerance than classic Java Fern.

Planting Attach the rhizome to driftwood, rock, or hardscape with thread or gel glue. The lighter, more open frond structure of Trident Java Fern particularly suits upward-angled placement on driftwood arms or narrow, elevated hardscape structures, where the fronds can spread and display their full form.

CO2 and Fertilization No CO2 needed. Weekly liquid fertilizer with iron and trace elements supports healthy, dark green fronds. The deeply lobed fronds, with their greater surface area-to-frond length ratio, benefit from good nutrient availability in the water column.

Reproduction Daughter plantlets form on mature frond undersides and edges. The lobed fronds may produce plantlets with simplified forms initially that develop full lobing as they mature. Allow plantlets to develop at least 3–4 fronds before removal.

Aquascape Use Trider Java Fern works beautifully alongside mosses and smooth-leaved plants as a textural contrast element. In Japanese-style Nature Aquarium scapes, its fern-like complexity references temperate forest aesthetics while remaining fully tropical in its requirements.

Common Problems All the same issues as classic Java Fern apply: avoid burying the rhizome, minimize high light exposure, and recognize black spots on frond undersides as natural sporangia rather than disease.
