Juncus effusus
Origin: Europe (native to Netherlands and Belgium)
Juncus effusus (Soft Rush / Pitrus) forms dense clumps of bright glossy-green cylindrical stems that provide upright linear structure at the pond edge throughout the year, bearing small brown flower clusters in summer. A familiar native of Dutch and Belgian wetlands, it is one of the most widely sold marginal pond plants in Benelux garden centres. Tolerates boggy soil to 10 cm water depth.
Plant at the pond margin in shallow water (0–10 cm depth) or in permanently moist soil. Thrives in full sun to partial shade. Remove old dead stems in late winter to encourage vigorous fresh growth. Divide overgrown clumps every few years. Fully cold-hardy and frost-tolerant.
