Lagenandra toxicaria
Also known as: Toxic Lagenandra, Sri Lanka Lagenandra
Origin: Sri Lanka
Lagenandra toxicaria is a striking and imposing aroid from Sri Lanka, producing large, broad, glossy dark green leaves on sturdy petioles from a robust rhizome. Its common name alludes to the fact that, like many aroids, it contains irritating compounds that can cause skin irritation — gloves are advisable when handling. In the aquarium and paludarium it is a rewarding plant, tolerating a broad range of conditions and rewarding steady fertilisation with impressive leaf size. It grows faster than many rheophytic aroids and establishes reliably. A bold specimen plant that makes an immediate impact in any aquatic or semi-aquatic display.
Light: Moderate; strong light encourages larger leaves; tolerates some shade. CO2: Not required; grows well under ambient CO2 in established aquariums. Fertilisation: Regular root tabs and liquid feeding support the large, fast-growing leaves. Placement: Background or centerpiece in large aquariums and paludariums. Propagation: Rhizome division; cut healthy sections with roots and replant.
