Lemna minor
Origin: Europe (native to Netherlands and Belgium)
Lemna minor (Common Duckweed / Gewone Eendenkroos) is the familiar bright green duckweed forming a continuous emerald carpet of tiny oval fronds on the pond surface. It provides beneficial shade to reduce algae growth and serves as a high-protein food source for ducks, frogs, and other wildlife. Native throughout the Netherlands and Belgium, it is the quintessential Dutch pond plant, highly valued for wildlife ponds.
Simply scatter fronds on the pond surface. Grows rapidly in nutrient-rich water under full sun. Thin periodically to prevent complete surface coverage that reduces oxygen exchange for fish. Can be skimmed off as a nutritious supplement for goldfish, koi, and waterfowl. No care required beyond removal if overgrowth occurs.
