Lepanthes calodictyon
Also known as: Net-Leaf Lepanthes, Lace Orchid
Origin: Colombia, Ecuador
Lepanthes calodictyon is treasured equally for its striking foliage and its modest but charming flowers. The leaves display an intricate reticulated network of lighter veins on a deep green to olive background, giving a net-like or lace effect that makes the plant attractive even when not in bloom. The tiny, intricately structured flowers bloom sequentially along persistent spikes, providing nearly year-round floral interest in well-maintained conditions.
Like all Lepanthes, it grows as a twig epiphyte in cool to intermediate cloud-forest conditions in Colombia and Ecuador. It requires consistently moist roots — achieved through frequent misting or position near a waterfall feature — and gentle but continuous airflow to prevent fungal issues. Its miniature size makes it an excellent candidate for inclusion alongside mosses and liverworts on detailed paludarium hardscape.
Light: Low-medium indirect; 1,000–2,500 lux; strong light bleaches the attractive leaf patterning. CO2/Humidity: No CO2; humidity above 80%; gentle air circulation is essential to prevent crown rot. Fertilisation: Extremely dilute orchid fertiliser (one-eighth strength) misted weekly. Placement: Mount on fine cork bark or live sphagnum pad; position near a misting nozzle or waterfall splash zone. Propagation: Allow the mount colony to spread naturally; divide only when overcrowded.
