Lepanthes telipogoniflora
Also known as: Tasselled Lepanthes, Dancing Lady Micro-Orchid
Origin: Colombia
Lepanthes telipogoniflora is a jewel of the miniature orchid world, originating from the cloud forests of Colombia where it grows as a twig epiphyte in near-saturated air. Its tiny, intricately structured flowers resemble small insects or dancers with trailing filament tassels, blooming repeatedly along persistent ramicaul spikes from the same node for months at a time. The leaves rarely exceed 2 cm, making this plant an ideal occupant of small cork bark plaques inside terrariums or paludariums.
Successful cultivation demands consistently high humidity (above 80%), cool to intermediate temperatures, and excellent air circulation — conditions readily achieved in a well-ventilated paludarium with a cool microzone. It should be mounted on fine-grain cork bark or tree-fern fibre and misted multiple times daily, or placed where condensation regularly wets the roots.
Light: Low to medium indirect; 1,000–2,500 lux; avoid any direct sun exposure. CO2/Humidity: No CO2; maintain humidity above 80%; air movement is critical to prevent rot. Fertilisation: Mist weekly with extremely dilute orchid fertiliser (one-eighth strength). Placement: Mount on fine cork bark or sphagnum moss pad; position in the cooler, upper zone of the paludarium. Propagation: Division of multi-growth mounts or allowing the colony to spread along the mount naturally.
