Lilaeopsis novae-zelandiae
Also known as: New Zealand Micro Sword, NZ Micro Sword
Origin: New Zealand
Lilaeopsis novae-zelandiae originates from the waterways and estuaries of New Zealand where it tolerates a wide range of temperatures including near-cold conditions, making it one of the few carpet plants suitable for unheated temperate aquariums. Its blades are slightly more robust and upright than L. brasiliensis, producing a clean, orderly grass carpet. It spreads through horizontal rhizomes at a measured pace, making it easier to control than faster-growing species.
Light: Medium (30–50 PAR) is sufficient; tolerates lower light better than most carpet plants. CO2: Not required but beneficial for faster spreading; performs well in low-tech setups. Planting: Plant clumps 3–5 cm apart; the rhizome should be at or just below the substrate surface. Maintenance: Trim blades to desired height; divide and replant runners to fill bare spots. Note: Suitable for cool-water setups (16–24°C); one of the few carpet options for temperate tanks.
