Limnobium laevigatum
Also known as: South American Frogbit, Amazon Frogbit
Origin: South America
Limnobium laevigatum is native to South American freshwater bodies from Mexico to Argentina, where it forms dense floating mats in warm, still waterways. In the aquarium it is prized for its prolific, feathery white root mass that hangs well below the surface, creating a refuge for fry and a feeding ground for shrimp and small fish browsing for microorganisms. It is one of the most efficient nutrient-removing floating plants available, making it particularly valuable in heavily stocked community tanks.
Light: Medium to high surface light; grows vigorously under bright aquarium lighting. CO2: Not required; absorbs nutrients efficiently from the water column via roots. Planting: Place freely on the water surface; avoid strong surface agitation. Maintenance: Thin regularly as it spreads fast via daughter plants; leave adequate open water for gas exchange. Note: Excellent for breeding tanks — the hanging root mass is a favoured spawning site for many fish species.
