Limnophila rugosa
Also known as: Rugose Ambulia, Crinkle-leaf Limnophila
Origin: Southeast Asia
Limnophila rugosa is a distinctive aquatic plant from Southeast Asia that stands apart from other Limnophila species due to its attractively crinkled, rugose leaf surfaces. The leaves have a bumpy, textured quality reminiscent of savoy cabbage on a miniature scale, adding tactile interest to background plantings that is rare among stem plants. The plant also produces a pleasant aromatic fragrance when handled. It grows at a moderate pace and is tolerant of a wide range of water conditions, making it accessible to aquarists at various skill levels. Its unusual leaf texture provides excellent contrast against smooth-leaved plants in naturalistic aquascape compositions.
Light: Medium to high (35–50 PAR); crinkled leaf texture best expressed under good light. CO2: Beneficial at 15–25 mg/L; improves growth and maintains compact form. Fertilisation: Regular comprehensive fertilisation; moderate nutrient requirement. Placement: Background to midground; excellent textural contrast plant. Propagation: Cut 10–12 cm top sections; roots readily in substrate.
