Littorella uniflora
Also known as: Shoreweed, Lake Shoreweed
Origin: Europe
Littorella uniflora — Shoreweed — is a small European aquatic plant found on the sandy or gravelly margins of oligotrophic lakes across northern Europe, particularly in Scandinavia, the British Isles, and the Atlantic regions of France and Spain. It produces compact rosettes of narrow, cylindrical to slightly flattened leaves 3–12 cm tall that grow pressed close to the substrate and form dense, lawn-like mats in shallow, very clear, nutrient-poor water.
As an isoetid-type plant, Shoreweed is adapted to life in water with very low dissolved minerals and nutrients, obtaining most of its carbon from sediment pore-water CO2 rather than from the water column. This means it is particularly sensitive to eutrophication and excess nutrients, but highly suited to the extreme soft-water aquarium conditions that replicate Scandinavian mountain lakes.
For aquarists creating Nordic, Scandinavian, or European cold-water biotopes, Littorella is a top-tier foreground plant. It associates authentically with Isoetes lacustris, Lobelia dortmanna, Pilularia globulifera, and similar isoetid species in a uniquely serene, minimalist aesthetic.
Light: Medium to high; bright, consistent light is needed to keep the rosettes compact and the lawn dense. CO2: Not required from the water column; root-zone CO2 from fine substrate is beneficial. Fertilisation: Lean, sandy substrate only; avoid nutrient-rich substrates which cause rot and algae in this oligotrophic species. Placement: Foreground carpet in cool, very soft-water aquariums; do not mix with high-nutrient planted tanks. Propagation: Produces runners (stolons) from which daughter rosettes develop; divide when well-established.
