Lomariopsis lineata
Also known as: Coral Moss, Lomariopsis, Mini Pellia
Origin: Asia
Lomariopsis lineata is a small aquatic fern gametophyte that has gained enormous popularity in the planted tank hobby under various trade names including 'Coral Moss' and 'Süsswassertang alternative'. It forms dense, cushion-like mats of tiny, roundish, bright to mid-green leaf-like structures (technically prothalli) that closely resemble Subwassertang in form but are distinctly different in biology and texture. Individual fronds are tiny — less than 1 cm — and the overall mat is lush and velvety.
This plant is extremely versatile in the aquarium: it can be attached to driftwood or rock, placed in mesh or bags as a foreground carpet, or allowed to grow as a floating ball. It tolerates a wide range of water parameters and light levels, growing without CO2, though it benefits from moderate fertilisation. It is popular as a cover for fry and shrimp, and its dense mat structure provides excellent microhabitat. Regular thinning prevents the centre of a mat from dying off.
Light: Low to medium; adapts well to a wide range of light levels; moderate light improves growth rate. CO2: Not required; grows adequately without supplemental CO2 in stable, clean water. Fertilisation: Monthly liquid micronutrient dosing; this robust plant tolerates infrequent fertilisation. Placement: Attach to driftwood, rocks, or mesh; can be formed into balls or carpets; suitable for foreground or midground. Propagation: Divide mat sections and re-attach to new surfaces; growth is relatively fast compared to true mosses.
