Ludwigia glandulosa
Also known as: Glandular Ludwigia, Purple Ludwigia
Origin: North America / Central America
Ludwigia glandulosa is one of the few aquarium plants to approach true purple colouration, producing narrow, lanceolate leaves that develop deep wine-red to dark purple hues under strong lighting and CO2. The tissue culture form delivers a clean, vigorous plant without the risk of snails or algae. Growth rate is moderate, making it more manageable than some other demanding Ludwigia species. The narrow leaf shape and intense colour create striking vertical accents in the background or as mid-background accent groups. Iron-rich fertilisation and soft, acidic water are essential for maintaining the deep purple colouration. Plant in groups of 5–7 for maximum visual impact. A staple of Dutch aquascaping competitions.
Light: High CO2: Required Fertilisation: Iron and micro-nutrient rich; balanced macros Placement: Background or midground accent Propagation: Top cuttings replanted; side shoots after trimming
