Ludwigia inclinata var. verticillata 'Tornado'
Also known as: Tornado Ludwigia, Twisted Ludwigia, Helical Ludwigia
Origin: South America (cultivar)
Ludwigia inclinata var. verticillata 'Tornado' is one of the most remarkable aquarium plants available, producing whorled orange-red needle leaves that form a spiralling, helical column with an appearance unlike any other stem plant in existence. The natural twist of the stem combined with the radiating whorled leaves creates a mesmerising corkscrew effect that is an immediate conversation piece in any planted aquarium. Like all inclinata varieties, it is highly demanding — requiring very soft and acidic water, intense lighting, consistent CO2 injection, and regular comprehensive fertilisation to maintain its extraordinary form and colour. Reserved for experienced aquascapers, but utterly spectacular when conditions are met.
Light: Extremely high (65+ PAR); colour and twist form lost under inadequate light. CO2: Essential at 30–40 mg/L; non-negotiable for helical growth pattern. Fertilisation: Very intensive iron and micronutrient dosing; very soft water (GH <4) required. Placement: Midground focal point; a single-species group of 3–5 stems is sufficient. Propagation: Cut 8–10 cm tips very carefully; handle stems gently to avoid breakage.
