Ludwigia palustris
Also known as: Super Red Ludwigia, Red Ludwigia, Marsh Purslane Red
Origin: Cultivar (cosmopolitan origin)
Ludwigia palustris 'Super Red' is a cultivar form selected specifically for maximum red pigmentation, producing deep burgundy-red colour on both the upper and lower leaf surfaces even under medium light conditions. This makes it significantly more accessible than demanding Rotalas while still delivering striking visual impact.
It is a fast grower that benefits from regular trimming every 1–2 weeks to maintain a dense, bushy shape. Without trimming stems become leggy and lower leaves drop. It adapts to a wide pH and hardness range and is tolerant of most municipal tap water conditions, making it one of the most reliable red stems for community planted tanks.
An outstanding choice for any planted tank from beginner to advanced, and particularly effective as a red background anchor in Nature Aquarium and Dutch layouts.
Light: Medium to high (30–80 PAR); deeper burgundy-red at higher intensities. CO2: Beneficial at 15–25 mg/L; grows and colours well without CO2 under high light. Fertilisation: Weekly balanced liquid fertiliser; iron supplementation intensifies red colour. Placement: Background; group 7–11 stems with 2 cm spacing; trim every 1–2 weeks. Propagation: Trim tops at 10–15 cm; quick to root within 3–5 days.
