Ludwigia repens
Also known as: Creeping Ludwigia, Red Ludwigia
Origin: North / Central America
Ludwigia repens is native to North and Central America and is prized for its exceptional hardiness and adaptability. The oval leaves are green on the upper surface and deep burgundy to red on the underside, with colouration intensifying under stronger light. It is one of the few red-leaved plants that performs acceptably in low-light tanks, though high light brings out its full colour potential. Fast-growing and undemanding, it is an excellent choice for beginners seeking colour in a low-tech setup.
Light: Low to high (15–80 PAR); red underside colouration improves significantly with more light. CO2: Not required; optional CO2 at 10–20 mg/L boosts growth rate and intensity. Fertiliser: Weekly balanced liquid fertiliser; tolerates a broad nutrient range. Planting: Background groups of 5–9 stems; trim every 2–3 weeks for bushy appearance. Growth: Fast; 15–40 cm; one of the easiest red stem plants to maintain.
