Marsilea crenata
Origin: Asia
Marsilea crenata is a tiny aquatic fern that produces delicate, clover-shaped leaves on short stems, creating a charming low-growing carpet in the aquarium foreground. More tolerant of lower light than many carpet plants, it adapts well to a range of conditions. Increasingly popular in Belgian and Dutch shops as interest in low-tech carpeting options has grown.
Plant individual stems 2–3 cm apart in fine substrate. Grows slowly but spreads via runners. No CO2 required but CO2 supplementation accelerates carpet density. Trim periodically to keep the carpet flat and even. Compatible with all fish and shrimp. A charming low-tech alternative to Hemianthus and Eleocharis.
