Mentha aquatica
Origin: Europe (native to Netherlands and Belgium)
Mentha aquatica is the native water mint of Dutch and Belgian waterways, producing whorls of soft mauve-pink flowers on upright stems from July to October, highly attractive to bumblebees and butterflies. It spreads freely along pond margins creating dense, fragrant ground cover that also suppresses weeds. Plant in boggy soil or very shallow water at the pond edge.
Plant at the pond margin in boggy soil or up to 10 cm water depth. Thrives in full sun. Spreads aggressively via runners; contain in a pot to prevent it taking over smaller ponds. Cut back after flowering to encourage compact regrowth. Fully cold-hardy and frost-tolerant.
